Ask Dr. Hilda
Question: My name is Brianne, I am 18 years old and have been experiencing multiple vaginal infections since i was a young child. I have recurrent yeast infection, urinary tract infections and BV. I take cranberry supplements, acidophillus and vitamin C on a daily basis. I have cut caffeine and as much refined sugars out of my diet as possible. I cannot afford health insurance so whenever i get an infection i go to a free womens clinic and they give me medicine and send me on my way. i dont want anymore antibiotics i want to know what is wrong with my body. I do everything right. i pee before and after sex..i use unscented everything including my soap which is specially formulated for sensitive skin. I need help. I have researched and tried everything i can think of. i have been tested for std's multiple times in the past year. I dont know what to do but i cannot live like this anymore. I also have never had an orgasm during sex.. Could that be related? If not what can i do? have you written a book that could help me? i would greatly appreciate a response. Thank you.
Answer: You are doing everything right. In fact, so much so, that I wonder whether you are actually having infections. Sometimes we confuse normal vaginal secretions with an infection. Vaginal dryness may cause irritation and discomfort after sex that may last for days. It can be confusing because, sometimes, women are given medication without a culture to prove that an infection is actually present. My only suggestion would be to make sure you are using a condom and water based lubricant every time that you have sex. It is not unusual not to have an orgasm during sex, and that certainly would not lead to an infection. My book, What Your Mother Never Told You About Sex, might be useful. --Dr. Hilda
