Ask Dr. Hilda
Question: I am emailing because I am a 39 1/2 year old female who is in need of advice!!!!!!! I have had the procedure Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), after 2 years I became pregnant. Baby is fine.. But I am back at point A. Very heavy bleeding, cycle lasting 5-9 days, extremely bloated and ruining my clothing etc.. I thought I was a candidate for the endometrial ablation but my doctor said "my fibroids were to big for this procedure and that my only options is a hysterectomy." I really don't want to have a hysterectomy but if I have no choice then so be it.. But I would love to have your advice... before I go to the cutting board..
Answer: You are right to get a second opinion, but you need to see someone who can do an exam, sonogram, and give you a reasonable list of options. Hysterectomy should be the option of last resort. Possible options include birth control pills, myomectomy, endometrial ablation, repeat UAE, among others. I'd suggest that you see 2 other doctors before agreeing to any sugery. --Dr. Hilda
